From April 1st. to May 2nd., LACSN will be celebrating its 8th Solidarity Month! Join us for the launch of this important month in the most typical Latin American style possible: A “Peña Folklorica”.
This year our Solidarity Month will cover strategic political topics selected by our members as the most relevant from the processes currently happening in Latin America:
Central American Struggles: A panel discussion about the current situation in the North Triangle of Central America, with Edgar S. Godoy – Fred Alvarado and Alfredo Marroquin, Thursday, April 21st, 7: 00 PM at Friends House (60 Lowther Ave).
Latin American South Continent Struggles and Outlook, a panel discussion about Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay with Luis Tapia, Julio Manfrini and Jesus Silva and Vivian Mendes from Brazil. Tuesday, April 26th @ 7 PM, OISE, boardroom 5-280.
Land and Social Justice in Colombia: Prospects for the Peace Deal, with Colombian sociologist, writer and journalist Alfredo Molano, Friday, April 29th, 7:00 PM at the Holy Trinity Church - Parroquia San Esteban (19 Trinity Square).
Individuals and organizations interested in collaborating with the organization and/or presentation of political, historical, social, community oriented events, speaking engagements, artistic exhibits, poetry/book readings, video discussions, art in the street, drama/theater, etc..... during the Peña Folklorica and/or the Solidarity Month, can send your submissions to:

Opening Celebration:
Launch of the 8th Solidarity Month
LACSN’s Peña Folklorica will be a fun gathering where our friends, activists and artists will enjoy together a night of music, poetry, theater, dance, reading, juggling and other artistic expressions. "Peñas Folkloricas or Culturales" promote people's interest in their own culture, foster spaces where artists can display their art and extraordinary expressions while encouraging respect for Latin American ancestors and our similar identities.
Our Peña Folklorica will be an evening of live music and presentations filled with the excitement and creativity of our Latin American community. This year we are lucky to count with artworks from various Latin American artists, two of them from Colombian painter Alipio Jaramillo, which will be handed out to the public in raffles happening throughout the night. During the evening we will pay tribute to political and social leaders recently assassinated in various Latin American countries:
- Berta Caceres, Nelson Noe Garcia (Honduras);
- Venancio Queupumil (Chile);
- William Castillo, Marisela Tombe, James Balanta, Klaus Zapata, Alexander Oime, Milton Yesid Escobar Ramírez, Gil de Jesús Silgado (Colombia);
- Walter Manfredo Mendez Barrio, Rigoberto Lima Choc (Guatemala);
- Ricardo Duran (Venezuela), and
- 14 journalists (Mexico) amongst many others.
