The conservative governments' disregard for health and human rights
The impacts of The Interim Federal Health Program (IFH) gap left by federal cuts to refugee health.
The (IFHP) provides temporary health-care coverage to eligible protected persons, refugee claimants and others who do not qualify for provincial or territorial health insurance plans.
If these cuts are implemented, all refugees will lose access to essential medications, and thousands designated as coming from 'safe countries' will be denied healthcare services altogether, even in the case of life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks. These cuts highlight the current government's utter disregard for health and human rights and they will leave refugees, an already vulnerable group, struggling harder for survival.
Numerous organizations and health professionals have expressed concern over negative health impacts on refugees. Pregnant women, children and those with chronic diseases will have poorer health outcomes. The prevalence of physical (e.g. diabetes) and mental (e.g. depression) conditions will increase. Some will not even be treated for heart attacks!
Speaker - Ritika Goel an organizer with Health for All, a migrant justice organization in Toronto that advocates for access to health and healthcare for everyone in Canada, regardless of immigration status. She is also a family physician who works with migrants and volunteers at the Scarborough Clinic for the Uninsured.
We'll explore the recent refugee health cuts in the context of ongoing broader regressive immigration policy changes in Canada. also look at the immigration system at a high level and go through various types of status and the barriers to health and healthcare that exist at these different levels.
